Mail theft and dumpster diving are real threats — your name, address, account numbers, and Social Security number can all appear on documents you throw away. A cross-cut shredder turns sensitive documents into confetti that can't be reassembled. At $35–$55, it's cheap insurance.
Strip-cut shredders cut paper into long strips that can theoretically be reassembled. Cross-cut shredders cut paper into small rectangular pieces — much harder to reassemble. For financial documents, cross-cut is the minimum you should use. Micro-cut shredders (even smaller pieces) are available for higher security needs.
Shred anything with your name and address, account numbers, Social Security number, medical information, or financial details. This includes: bank statements, credit card statements, medical bills, tax documents, credit card offers, utility bills, and expired IDs or credit cards.
Cross-cut shredders need occasional oiling to keep the blades sharp and prevent jamming. Use shredder oil (or canola oil in a pinch) every 30 minutes of use or monthly. Run a few sheets of paper through after oiling to distribute it. This extends the life of the shredder significantly.
