A standard ABC extinguisher won't stop a lithium battery fire, but it can knock down the flames long enough for you to escape or get the battery overboard. Keep one at the helm and one near any battery storage area. The Kidde Pro 210 is compact, reliable, and rechargeable — the right tool for what it's designed to do.
A Class ABC dry chemical extinguisher works by interrupting the chemical chain reaction of ordinary combustion. It is effective on wood, fabric, gasoline, diesel, and electrical fires. A lithium-ion battery in thermal runaway generates its own oxygen internally — a standard extinguisher can knock down the visible flames temporarily but cannot extinguish the battery itself. Use it to protect your escape route, not to put out the battery.
Keep one extinguisher at the helm within arm's reach of the operator, and a second near any battery storage area. Mount in a bracket that allows one-handed removal. Check the pressure gauge at the start of each season — the needle should be in the green zone.
Federal law requires fire extinguishers on all motorized boats. The number and size required depends on your boat's length and whether it has an enclosed engine compartment. See our full boat fire extinguisher guide for complete requirements by boat size.
