What It Can and Cannot Do

A Class ABC dry chemical extinguisher works by interrupting the chemical chain reaction of ordinary combustion. It is effective on wood, fabric, gasoline, diesel, and electrical fires. A lithium-ion battery in thermal runaway generates its own oxygen internally — a standard extinguisher can knock down the visible flames temporarily but cannot extinguish the battery itself.
