Legal Requirements
Federal law requires visual distress signals on all boats used on coastal waters, the Great Lakes, and waters connected to them. Boats under 16 feet used only during daylight hours are exempt. Check your state's requirements for inland waters.
Flare Expiration
Flares expire 42 months from the date of manufacture. The expiration date is stamped on each flare. Expired flares do not meet USCG requirements and may not work reliably. Check your flares at the start of each boating season.
How to Signal
In a distress situation, fire one flare, wait a minute, fire a second. This confirms you're in distress and not just testing. Save at least one flare until you can see or hear a rescue vessel approaching.
