A lithium battery fire containment bag is the single most useful piece of equipment for lithium battery emergencies on a boat. Used early — when you notice swelling or smoke — it can contain the fire and prevent it from spreading to the vessel. Every boat carrying lithium batteries should have one accessible.
At the first sign of battery trouble — swelling, unusual heat, hissing, chemical smell, or smoke — place the battery in the containment bag and seal it. Move the sealed bag to an open deck area away from fuel and upholstery. If safe to do so, get it off the boat. The bag contains the flames and toxic gases while you manage the situation.
Choose a bag sized for your largest battery. A bag that is too small cannot be properly sealed. Measure your trolling motor battery, house bank cells, or portable power station before purchasing. When in doubt, go one size larger.
A containment bag works best as part of a complete lithium battery safety plan: quality batteries with a proper BMS, a temperature monitor in the battery compartment, a standard fire extinguisher for flame knockdown, and a containment bag for early intervention. No single item replaces the others.
