Boating has always carried risk. But the gap between a boater who gets into trouble and one who gets home safely has never been more about gear than it is today. Modern navigation tools — most of them affordable and easy to use — have changed what is possible when something goes wrong on the water.

This is not a list of nice-to-haves. These are the tools that the Coast Guard, experienced cruisers, and marine safety organizations consistently point to as the difference between a close call and a tragedy.

1. Chartplotter / GPS — Know Exactly Where You Are

A chartplotter is a GPS unit that displays your position on a nautical chart in real time. You can see exactly where you are, where the shallow water is, where the channel markers are, and where you are headed.

Paper charts are still worth having as a backup, but they cannot tell you your position. A chartplotter can.

What to look for:

  • Screen size: At least 7 inches. Larger is better, especially in bright sunlight. A 9- or 12-inch screen is worth the extra cost if you spend significant time on the water.
  • Sunlight readability: Look for displays rated at 1,000 nits or higher. Cheap screens wash out completely in direct sun.
  • Chart subscription: Most chartplotters use Navionics or C-MAP charts. Both are excellent. Budget around $50–$100/year for chart updates.
  • Integration: A chartplotter that connects to your VHF radio and AIS (see below) gives you a complete picture of your surroundings on one screen.

Recommended options:

  • Garmin ECHOMAP UHD2 74cv (~$500) — excellent mid-range option for most recreational boaters
  • Garmin GPSMAP 923xsv (~$1,200) — larger screen, more features, good for serious cruisers
  • Lowrance HDS PRO 9 (~$1,400) — strong competitor to Garmin, excellent chart detail

For smaller boats and kayaks: A handheld GPS like the Garmin GPSMAP 86sci (~$450) is waterproof, floats, and works without shore power.

2. VHF Radio with DSC — The Single Most Important Safety Device

If you only add one piece of safety equipment to your boat, make it a VHF marine radio with Digital Selective Calling (DSC).

Here is why: When you register your VHF radio with the FCC (free, takes 10 minutes), it gets a unique identifier called an MMSI number. When you connect the radio to your GPS, pressing the red distress button for three seconds automatically transmits your vessel name, MMSI number, and exact GPS coordinates to the Coast Guard and every DSC-equipped vessel within range.

You do not have to say a word. You do not have to know your coordinates. One button, and rescue services know exactly who you are and where you are.

What to look for:

  • DSC capability (standard on virtually all modern VHF radios)
  • NMEA 2000 or NMEA 0183 connectivity to link with your GPS
  • Waterproof rating of IPX7 or better
  • Loud, clear speaker — you need to hear it over engine noise and wind

Recommended options:

  • Standard Horizon GX1850 (~$130) — best value, reliable, easy to use
  • Icom IC-M330G (~$180) — built-in GPS so it works even without a chartplotter connection
  • Standard Horizon GX2400 (~$250) — AIS receiver built in, excellent all-in-one option

Important: Register your MMSI number at BoatUS.com/mmsi or through the FCC. It is free and takes minutes. Without registration, the distress signal cannot be traced back to your vessel.

Handheld backup: Always carry a handheld VHF as a backup. The Standard Horizon HX210 (~$100) is waterproof, floats, and fits in a life jacket pocket.

3. EPIRB vs. PLB — Your Last Line of Defense

An EPIRB (Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacon) and a PLB (Personal Locator Beacon) both do the same fundamental thing: when activated, they transmit a distress signal via satellite to the international COSPAS-SARSAT rescue coordination system. Within minutes, rescue authorities have your exact GPS coordinates.

These devices work anywhere on earth, regardless of cellular coverage or VHF radio range. They are your last line of defense when everything else has failed.

EPIRB — for the vessel

  • Registered to the boat, not a person
  • Larger, more powerful signal
  • Can be set to activate automatically when submerged (Category I) or manually (Category II)
  • Best for: Any boat venturing offshore, crossing open water, or operating in areas with limited Coast Guard coverage
  • Cost: $250–$600
  • Recommended: ACR GlobalFix V6 (~$350) — Category I, automatic activation, GPS-equipped

PLB — for the person

  • Registered to an individual
  • Smaller, fits in a life jacket pocket or on a belt
  • Must be activated manually
  • Best for: Kayakers, sailors who go overboard, anyone who wants personal protection regardless of what boat they are on
  • Cost: $250–$400
  • Recommended: ACR ResQLink View (~$530) — compact, GPS-equipped, 24-hour battery

Do you need both? If you are doing any offshore or bluewater sailing, yes. The EPIRB covers the vessel; the PLB covers you personally if you end up separated from the boat.

Registration is mandatory and free: Register at beaconregistration.noaa.gov. An unregistered beacon causes false alarms and delays rescue.

4. AIS — See Other Vessels Before They See You

AIS (Automatic Identification System) is a transponder system used by commercial vessels, ferries, and an increasing number of recreational boats. It broadcasts each vessel's name, position, speed, heading, and destination.

With an AIS receiver on your chartplotter, you can see every AIS-equipped vessel in your area on your screen — including large ships that may not be watching for small boats. You can see their course and speed, and your chartplotter can calculate whether a collision is possible.

Receiver vs. Transponder:

  • AIS Receiver (~$150–$200): You can see other vessels, but they cannot see you. Good for collision avoidance awareness.
  • Class B Transponder (~$400–$600): You broadcast your position AND receive others. Commercial vessels and other boaters can see you on their screens. Strongly recommended for anyone venturing into shipping lanes or busy waterways.

Recommended:

  • Vesper Cortex M1 (~$600) — transponder, built-in WiFi, connects to your phone, excellent for cruisers
  • Garmin AIS 800 (~$450) — transponder, integrates seamlessly with Garmin chartplotters
  • Digi-Key AMEC Camino-108 (~$300) — solid budget transponder

5. Weather Apps — Know What Is Coming

Getting caught in weather you did not expect is one of the most common causes of boating accidents. The good news is that weather forecasting for mariners has never been better.

Free options:

  • NOAA Weather Radio: Still the gold standard for coastal and offshore forecasts. Available on any VHF radio by tuning to WX channels.
  • Windy (windy.com or app): Excellent free visualization of wind, waves, and weather systems. Easy to read, surprisingly accurate.
  • NOAA Marine Forecasts: Available at weather.gov/marine. Text-based but highly detailed.

Paid options worth the money:

  • PredictWind (~$50–$150/year): The best offshore weather routing service available. Uses multiple weather models and lets you compare forecasts. Essential for passage planning. The offshore app works without internet once downloaded.
  • Passage Weather (free with premium option): Good for coastal cruising, easy to read wind and wave forecasts.
  • Weather4D (~$30/year): Popular with European sailors, excellent GRIB file viewer.

The rule: Check the forecast before you leave. Check it again the night before a longer trip. And always have a plan for where you will shelter if conditions deteriorate faster than expected.

6. How Starlink Changes the Safety Picture

For years, getting reliable weather data offshore meant expensive satellite subscriptions or waiting until you were close enough to shore for a cell signal. Starlink has changed that.

With a Starlink connection aboard, you can:

  • Access full PredictWind or Passage Weather routing data anywhere, not just near shore
  • Make a video call to the Coast Guard or a marina if your VHF is compromised
  • Download updated GRIB weather files in seconds rather than waiting for a slow SSB radio download
  • Stay in contact with family so someone always knows your position and plans

Starlink does not replace a VHF radio, EPIRB, or any other dedicated safety device — those work without power or internet and are purpose-built for emergencies. But it fills the gap between "everything is fine" and "I need help," giving you better information and more communication options than any previous generation of boaters has had.

One More Thing: File a Float Plan

None of this gear matters if no one knows you are missing. Before every trip, tell someone — a friend, a marina, a family member — where you are going, what route you are taking, and when you expect to be back. If you are not back by a certain time, they call the Coast Guard.

It costs nothing. It takes two minutes. And it has saved lives.
